Creating a Sustainable African/Black Centered Ecosystem

About Moderator: Chantel Akworkor Thompson is an educator, writer, art collector and independent curator based in Accra, Ghana. She is the founder of DēpART consultancy, which supports early-career artists in Ghana, bridging the knowledge gap between their home studios and the international market. She runs Beyond the Black Canvas, an online platform exclusively dedicated to amplifying the voices of Black artists and bringing communities of art enthusiasts together to share, support and collaborate. Through her art collection, she aims to create a visual archive of her lived experience as a British born Ghanaian, documenting the moments that have shaped her identity.

Kaloki Nyami: Drawing heavily on the stories of the Kamba people told by his grandmother. He explores how history and identity are intertwined, looking at the past, the present and the space in between. His works are multilayers and characterised by rich layers, offering fragments to be pieced together slowly with stitching. The lengthy research process employed in the making of the works is mirrored in the experience of viewing them, “it’s like layers of history “.

Reggie Khumalo: A fine Artist, motorbike adventurer and humanitarian. Who devotes his life and work to philanthropy. He sees himself as a nomad who is home anywhere on the African continent. He has worked and traveled across the African continent to bring back the spirit of Ubuntu (exhibiting kindness and care for all) by helping youths from disadvantaged communities. He is intentional about using his art as a vehicle for social change. His paintings possess rich tones and bold colours that give his work a strong presence. His focus is on unearthing the innate power and humanness within us.
