MIDNIGHT OIL:
Sounds of Creation
A curated experience featuring artists and the music that inspires them. We’ve invited artists from around the world to create music playlists that provide the soundtrack to their creative process. Tune in to rock out and learn more about these amazing artists!
Shani Jamila
This particular playlist is all about what it feels like to be at home, which is one of the major themes I explore in my work. I live in Brooklyn, so these songs give me the feeling of summers in NYC and sun splattered dance parties in the park.
Philece Roberts
Philece Roberts is a Painter, Illustrator, and Graphic Designer, whose work is most recognized for her strong and graceful representation of Black Women. With a unique fusion of traditional art with contemporary style, she explores the depths of inner beauty, firmly rooted in the experiences and empowerment of Black Women.
Demond Melancon
Demond Melancon works solely with a needle and thread to sew glass beads onto canvas. He began this form of art in 1992 when he first became part of a 200+-year-old culture known as the Black Masking Culture of New Orleans. Today as a Big Chief, Melancon is well known for creating massive suits which he wears as a Black Masker in ceremonial battles on Mardi Gras day.
ALEXIS PESKINE
Alexis Peskine’s signature works are large-scale mixed media ‘portraits’ of the African diaspora, which are rendered by hammering nails of different gauge, with pin-point accuracy, into wood stained with coffee and mud.
HILARY BALU
In my list of chosen songs many are from African and diaspora artists whose music inspires me a lot as they sing about the conditions and reality of black people in a global approach and this affects my work.
NATRICE MILLER
Natrice Miller is an Atlanta-based documentary and portrait photographer whose personal work focuses on documenting the Black experience in America. She graduated from Florida A&M University with a B.S. in Journalism and Graphic Communication.
